Before you ask, the Bechdel Test is a real thing. I had stumbled upon this test while watching some videos over on The Escapist, and in searching around for more information on it, found out that it is based on a 1985 comic strip by Alison Bechdel. The comic strip is “The Rule”, from “Dykes to Watch Out For”, which gives the three criteria concerning the Bechdel Test that our character is talking about.
I am not sure how the whole smut direction came about though, we can blame the Internet on that one.
As a guy, I’ve never actually used the Bechdel Test for anything; however it does beg the question of how many films actually do pass the test. I wonder if there is a Bechdel Test equivalent for video games. I doubt many games would pass it either.
Dead or Alive doesn’t count. Although the majority of the women aren’t talking about guys, they are talking about beating the crap out of each other, or playing volleyball, and the shallowness of the game I think would preclude it from passing the test with any sorts of flying colors.
